Living Room Before & After

“We loved working with Joanne so much on our lake-house in Maine that she is now redoing our house in Andover, Massachusetts. Joanne has incredible ideas, is very timely, executes quickly and doesn’t have a big ego that gets in the way!”

—Lynne Andover, Massachusetts

Joanne updated a very “tired” looking living room with new wall color, furniture, rug, and new lighting. The owner was so pleased they hired her to update their main home in Massachusetts.

Working with a contractor we opened up the wall up in the kitchen to the living room, replacing all the Kitchen cabinets, counter and appliances we were able to increase the working space in the kitchen.  The new cabinets  are designed to give more storage space in small kitchens.  This change opened up the kitchen to the living room to give a more spacious feeling to the central part of the condo.  Also enables the cook to be part of the living room activity as well as a place for counter stools for guest or family to be a part the cooking.

The original living room design was intended to serve as a tv room in addition to overlooking a beautiful patio and gardens.  The new soft green wall color and neutral furniture with multiple windows helped to “bring the outside in”.  Solid colored furniture set the background for  a traditional multicolored rug.  The two swivel chairs on the left gave the homeowner the ability to have them as part of the TV area in addition to swiveling around to overlook the patio and gardens.  They were thrilled.

Cooking in a galley kitchen can be lonely.  This family wanted to increase prep space and add more cabinets.  They basically hated the galley look and wanted to change the shape of the kitchen and update the look but not spend a lot of money.  By extending the counter and adding a curve it took away from the galley look at the same time creating more cabinet space and counter space with an overhang so that guests and family can be a part of the kitchen fun.  By painting the old wooden cabinets a light neutral color it really updated the look of the kitchen.  They loved it!

Taking down the wall between the kitchen and dining room was a wonderful update.  It created room for more counter space,  new cherry cabinets and an island that the cook can be joined with an overhang for bar stools for guests and family.  By enlarging the doorway from the kitchen to the living room and sun room it now has a feeling of greater openness.
The unused wall was a perfect place for additional cabinets, counter space, a microwave and cook books.  For years the expanded space was known as “party central”.  This is the home Joanne left in Maine.

In order to reduce the bowling hall look of this client’s living room, Joanne designed the gas fireplace and display shelves that shortened the length of the room. Warm, neutral wall color and new hardwood flooring created a cozy spot for relaxing or entertaining.  The client brought her own furniture, rugs and lighting to make this space feel like home.
